A Guide to Weddings on Super 8
For couple’s who connect with nostalgia, film, and more casual approach to wedding videography – Super 8 videography is perfect. Between the filmic grain and the soundless mediums, it’s become one of the core ways that I capture wedding days. Taking a blended approach between film, and digital, I focus on capturing moments as they happen.

What will my Super 8 wedding film look like?
Super 8mm is a motion picture film format. Similar to the characteristics of film photos, Super 8 footage has grain, texture, and a unique feel to it. The way the footage captures, light and detail feels like it has character. Rather than long format moments that digital footage can capture, Super 8 wedding films are comprised of smaller clips. Not every second of your wedding day is captured, but pieces of core moments are.
Each roll of film documents 2-3 minutes of footage. Your edited wedding video will be clips of moments, edited, and pieces together to create your film from all the rolls that were taken on your wedding day. Your film is documentation of moments that happened in real time, as they happened.
No audio is recorded with the Super 8 camera, but your video may include added audio from your day in the form of music, ambient sounds, or vows & speeches.
What makes Super 8 videography different?
The production value on wedding day is often what makes Super 8 so distinct for couples. Digital wedding videography can be more of a production effort – with capturing audio, utilizing multiple angles from cameras, and having the ability to re-take footage if needed, or capture longer format moments.
Super 8 is limited by the film roll, offers one in the moment take, and does not capture live audio. As the Super 8 camera rolls on wedding day, you’ll hear the camera move the film through itself. It’s audibly there, but often blends into the photography experience. Filming Super 8 feels more candid and less like a full video production.
Each moment on Super 8 film has a cost and requires a level of intentionality. Film, development and scanning is roughly $150+ per roll. Vintage cameras vary in price, and sourcing cams and film can be more challenging. Having “back-ups” of camera and film requires more preparation and care from the videographer.
Film Wedding Videography
Super 8 and film is perfect for the couple who may not care about having every moment document but rather want the focus to be on authenticity of the day and a gallery that tells a story of it. Film has risk and with risk the reward has an emotional connection to it.
Many parts of the film experience are manual. Exposing the footage, focusing the image, and then the developing and scanning of the footage. My approach to analog/film mediums is to mitigate the risk when possible. I care deeply about creating and preserving your day so I come with back-up equipment, extra film, and digital equipment as well.
Your wedding videography is full of energy, captures the movement, and may have some of the imperfect qualities of film. Your film is not a template – each video is uniquely it’s own.
